Behind every great brewery is a steam boiler that makes it all possible. In fact, a steam boiler is one of the most important investments a brewery must make. Luckily, as the world leader in ultra-low NOx water tube boiler solutions, Miura makes choosing a steam boiler for your brewery easy with cost-effective water tube installations that save energy and floor space. Learn why compact water tube boilers are the ideal choice for new or expanding beer breweries.
1. Water tube boilers can be quickly turned on and off between brew shifts
Due to the thermodynamics of how conventional fire tube boilers work, they must be kept in standby mode at all times so that they will be ready to run when steam pressure is required. If you shut down a conventional fire tube boiler and leave it off for a day or two, it’s going to take anywhere between two and four hours for it to come back up to pressure. While the nonstop fire tube setup can work okay for massive, large-scale breweries with 24-hour operation schedules, it doesn’t make as much sense for smaller breweries (especially craft breweries) that only run one or two brew shifts per day. Having a fire tube boiler running around the clock when you only really need it for maybe eight to 16 hours max is simply a waste of precious fuel. That’s where water tube boilers come in.
“The benefit of a water tube boiler is if you don't need the boiler running on standby outside of these brew shifts — you can turn it off,” explains Brandon Hargett of Boiler Masters, Inc. in Greensboro, North Carolina. “A lot of these brewmasters, they'll shut their water tube boiler off at the end of the day, come in the next morning, hit the start button, fire it up, and in about 10-15 minutes, they've got working steam pressure to start heating their hot liquor tank and get the brewing going.”
2. Water tube boilers save precious floor space within a brewery
In the past decade, the U.S. has experienced an exciting boom of new craft brewery operations that are dedicated to producing top-notch brews. A lot of these companies are essentially enterprising start-ups that must make strategic decisions about how to expand their operations. That’s where the importance of a boiler’s physical footprint — the amount of space it takes up — comes in.“A lot of times, brewery owners will find a historic building or an old loft and renovate it — but that doesn't always translate to a lot of floor space,” Hargett explains. “So, they got to find a place to fit their steam boiler.”
A compact water tube boiler, like Miura’s LX series boiler models, solves this problem due to its small size. Unlike a massive fire tube boiler that can fill an entire room, a single LX 200 boiler is compact enough to fit through a standard doorway.
3. Water tube boilers help support eco-friendly brewery initiatives
Brewing is a fairly water-intensive process, which is why brewery owners and brewmasters who are interested in water conservation best practices gravitate toward compact water tube boilers, such as Miura’s LX series boiler models. Why? Because these boilers are designed to use as little water as possible to produce steam. Not only does this translate into energy and water savings but it also supports environmentally friendly brewery initiatives that can be marketed to eco-conscious consumers. Plus, when you couple these outstanding water conservation abilities with the fact that Miura’s LX series boiler models boast the nation’s lowest NOx emissions off the shelf, you have a boiler that both you and your consumers can feel good about.
