Serving the communities east of Hartford, CT, Manchester Memorial Hospital is a 249-bed facility offering inpatient and outpatient services as an affiliate of the Eastern Connecticut Health Network. Originally opened in 1920 to memorialize 45 local soldiers who died in World War I, this historic facility chose to install Miura Boilers as part of an overhaul to comply with new codes and laws, as well as to implement greener technologies. Challenges and Objectives
After years of diligently providing quality healthcare to the community, Manchester Memorial found itself in need of a major update of many infrastructural systems. In particular, its existing oil-fired boilers, in operation since 1966, were old, space-consuming and greatly ineffective to meet modern demands. The organization was also challenged by budgetary restrictions, updated federal regulations and the need to find a solution that would not disrupt operations. As part of a larger overhaul, the hospital turned to Miura Boilers to develop a solution that would improve energy efficiency.
Solution
After studying the energy patterns and needs of the facility, Miura teamed with the Building Technologies Division of Siemens Industry, Inc. to develop an energy conservation solution tailored to the hospital’s needs. As part of the comprehensive solution, Miura replaced the facility’s three aging 400-HP boilers with four dual-fuel EX-150 SGO boilers rated at 150-HP each. Compared to their aging counterparts which required hours to create steam, these boilers feature a low water content, water tube design that produces steam in five minutes, create needed redundancy and can be activated in series based on demand. In addition, the boilers maintain an astounding 85-percent fuel-to-steam efficiency, amply supplying steam for multiple purposes while greatly reducing the energy output.
Outcomes
As part of a larger set of solutions implemented in partnership with Siemens, the energy systems overhaul at Manchester Memorial has accomplished the following results:
- The hospital is on track to save approximately one-half million dollars a year in energy costs. The new boilers alone have reduced fuel expenses for the hospital by 35 percent — a savings of $180,000 per year so far.
- The installation has reduced maintenance costs for the hospital to the tune of $28,500 per year.
- Recent calculations show the boiler installations have greatly reduced the hospital’s output of nitrogen oxides and CO2 pollutants, reducing its annual carbon footprint by more than 5,300,000 pounds — the equivalent of removing 441 cars off the road — and qualifying the facility to receive $1.2 million in government incentives in the process.
After years of struggling under the weight of an aging and inefficient infrastructure, Miura Boilers helped Manchester Memorial Hospital improve its ability to provide the highest quality of healthcare to its patients while saving millions of dollars in energy costs and lowering its carbon footprint.
